This event is aimed at pre-service teachers unfamiliar with Levels 7–10 History who are possibly teaching history at these levels for the first time. Experienced teachers who feel they need more guidance with the curriculum, assessment ideas and resources may also find this event worthwhile.

Session 1: 1.05 pm–1.50 pm:
Introducing the Victorian Curriculum: History 7–10

Gerry Martin, Curriculum Manager (History and Civics), Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA)
This session will present an introduction to the Victorian Curriculum: History 7–10. Firstly, this workshop will provide an explanation of the structure of the Victorian Curriculum, some advice on developing a learning program and a discussion on the importance of the Historical Concepts and Skills strand. Secondly, this workshop will focus on assessing principles through an exploration of Achievement Standards, Indicative Progress and the development of assessment tasks.

Session 2: 2.10 pm–3.10 pm:
Traversing the 7–10 History Curriculum in Time and Place

Dr Catherine Hart, Flinders Christian Community College
In this session, you will actively navigate the Years 7–10 curriculum and examine varying approaches (chronological, geographic, narrative, conceptual) to teaching Years 7–10. The sequencing of skill development and conceptual understanding in building historical thinking will be discussed as it relates to different ‘content pathways.’ Fully-scoped curriculum documents and assessments will be shared as will some of the differentiated pedagogies used to develop students’ historical thinking.

Session 3: 3.10 pm–4.10 pm:
Putting the Story into History

Michael McLean, Flinders Christian Community College
Stories – some true, others that should be true – have shaped history throughout the ages. Students often remember the stories you tell long after they forget the essays they wrote. Relevant to teachers of Years 7–10, this session aims to equip you with a carpet bag of anecdotes and related activities, assessment ideas and resources designed to boost confidence, curiosity and credibility.
