This event is aimed at pre-service teachers and teachers unfamiliar with Levels 7–10 History who are possibly teaching History at these levels for the first time. Experienced teachers who feel they need more guidance with the implementation of the Victorian Curriculum V2.0, assessment ideas and resources may also find this event worthwhile.

12.35 pm – 1.20 pm Session 1: Introducing the Victorian Curriculum V2.0: History 7–10
Dr Adam Brodie-McKenzie, Curriculum Manager (History and Civics), Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA)

This session will present an introduction to the Victorian Curriculum V2.0: History 7–10. Firstly, this session will provide an explanation of the structure of the Victorian Curriculum, some advice on developing a learning program and a discussion on the importance of the Historical Concepts and Skills strand. Secondly, this session will focus on assessing principles through an exploration of Achievement Standards, Indicative Progress and the development of assessment tasks.

Session 2: Charting the Course: Equipping New History Teachers for the Classroom Ahead
Emily Wilkinson, Box Hill High School

This workshop provides new teachers of Levels 7–10 History with practical, adaptable, and impactful strategies to navigate a packed curriculum. Participants will explore how to break down and prioritise content, build historical thinking skills, and design inclusive, engaging learning experiences.

Through hands-on engagement with classroom activities, participants have the chance to test ideas alongside other teachers before adapting them for your own classrooms. Packed with ready-to-use resources, this workshop will leave teachers confident and equipped to bring History to life for their students.

Emily Wilkinson has a Master of Teaching from the University of Melbourne and has been teaching History for twelve years. Drawing on her experience in Junior School Leadership, she is passionate about developing engaging and inclusive opportunities for students that inspire curiosity and ignite a lifelong love of history. Emily has previously presented at HTAV conferences on revision techniques, whole-school History planning, using historical films in the classroom, and effective ways to resource the History classroom.
