Step into History at Novotel Hotel, Preston

Nestled in the heart of the northeast suburb of Preston, the Novotel Hotel is more than just a place to stay or conference venue – it’s a living piece of local history. Wander its corridors and you’ll find yourself walking through time, as the building still echoes its original purpose from the 1960s, when it proudly stood as the Preston and Northcote Community Hospital, affectionately known as PANCH.

PANCH, from Vision Hospital Group. PANCH in 1996, from Darebin Libraries.

"The story of PANCH began during the years of World War II, born from a vision to provide the growing Preston community with its own healthcare hub. After years of planning and post-war construction, the hospital officially opened its doors on 3 July 1960, by then Premier Sir Henry Bolte.

PANCH served the community for 38 years before its doors as a hospital closed in 1998 and the Northern Hospital in Epping took over.

Today, while the building has transformed into a modern hotel and conference venue, its walls still whisper tales of compassion, resilience, and community spirit."
