Middle Eastern Conflict - Hell in a Handbasket
Katherine Quin, Marymede Catholic College
The continuing hostilities in this region can mean that teaching the historical complexities of the Middle East can become a political minefield. Can we be objective in our presentation of this troubled territory? This session seeks to investigate how we as teachers can encourage students to come to informed opinions about the ongoing conflict of this region without necessarily falling victim to the ‘politically correct’ readings of its varied and multifaceted late twentieth century history.

9.45-10.30
Ensuring that Primary Sources Occupy a Primary Role in VCE 2: Twentieth Century History
Nick Frigo, Tutor and Education Consultant
In this session, Nick will provide examples and a range of ready to use primary sources and related activities which will slot right into the teaching of VCE Unit 2 Twentieth Century History. In recent times a range of online primary sources, archival materials and also replica (and genuine) ephemera have become available for use in the classroom. As a result, this session will be a valuable one for teachers new to the twentieth century course hungry to take away some resources and also for experienced teachers who may be time poor and would enjoy using some 'new' primary sources in their classes. This presentation will also make constant links to how 'up-skilling' students of twentieth century history, with a range of primary sources is an excellent preparation for Year 12 history studies.

Cold War – When will it be Over?
Ross Smith, Parade College
To what extent was the Cold War a conflict over ideology? Was it simply a struggle for power? A study of films from the 1950s reveals the small part ideas played in the popular media’s record of the conflict. Hollywood has often played a key role in portraying the current enemies of the USA. It has a long history of creating villains in support of the American government’s political agenda. Are there any similarities between the Cold War and today’s War on Terror? During this session, films from the 1950s will be compared to more recent Hollywood films featuring Arabs as terrorists.
