Who has studied History?

Many famous people have studies history and then moved into other areas of work. Among the many are:

  • Sacha Baron Cohen: Ali G, Borat
  • Kevin Rudd: Federal leader of the ALP
  • Gordon Brown: British Prime Minister
  • Salman Rushdie: Novelist
  • Prince Charles and Prince Edward

Recent British research has revealed that there are more History graduates as directors of British companies than graduates of any other subject. When asked how history aided their careers these graduates noted that the key skills of history, reading, argument, evaluating data and communication, played an important role in their careers. See http://www.hca.heacademy.ac.uk/history/h-journal.php

The study of history therefore can lead to many careers other than that of the Historian. Some options include:
  • Administration and commerce: project management, human resources, industrial relations
  • Arts: writing, performing arts
  • Communication industries: public relations, marketing, publishing, editing
  • Education: teaching, administration and management
  • Government: diplomacy, policy development, research, politics, public service and local government
  • Legal: policing, crime detection, criminology, law, advocacy, arbitration
  • Media: journalism, television and public relations
  • Tourism: travel writing, planning, operating and guiding tours
