Approaches to Teaching and Assessing Twentieth Century History
Elizabeth Morgan, The Peninsula School
This session will examine a range of approaches including film, interactive and written sources that aid in the study of the Vietnam War. There will also be some guidelines on how to tie in the skills needed for VCE Units 3 and 4 History during assessment.
9.45–10.30
An Alternative: Unit 1 People and Power – Civil Rights in the USA
Judy Anderson, Melbourne Girls Grammar
The study of the Afro-American Civil Rights Movement has taken on a new interest and immediacy with the presidency of Barack Obama. Judy will explore the context of the Civil Rights Movement in the USA as an alternative for VCE Units 1 or 2 through the discussion of different teaching approaches, student-directed learning and through the use of the virtual classroom.
10.30–11.00
Morning Tea

Active History
Ross Smith, Parade College
Teaching the Unit 1 course, compared to the Units 3 and 4 courses, has the huge advantage of flexibility. Although as teachers of History we are trying to prepare students to tackle the later units, we still have the opportunity to try something a little different. This session will focus on using a variety of day-to-day classroom activities that aid in the study of the history of Nazi Germany.
